Conclusion
The SE Plan requires Arun to make provision for
mixed development including around 9,300 new homes by 2026. This equates
to 465 houses per annum in the plan period to 2026.
The Panel’s Report for the Draft South East Plan
Examination-in-Public has been published and now requires Arun District
to make provision for an additional 2,000 houses, subject to
confirmation by the Secretary of State early in 2008.
With over 110 acres of previously developed land
within the curtilage of the airfield, Ford can accommodate significant
large-scale mixed development, including up to 5,000 houses (333 houses
per annum). This equates to over 50% of the district’s SE Plan
requirement.
By creating a Strategic Development Area (SDA) at
Ford, Arun can meet the known housing need for the district for the next
20 years, and at the same time, alleviate much of the pressure created
by current levels of “infill” and “greenfield” development.
A Strategic Development Area at Ford will protect
the existing urban built environment by reducing the need for “town
cramming” and offers an opportunity to build family homes rather than
flats. It will also assist in making up the district’s affordable
housing deficit.
A single new Strategic Development Area offers a
fresh canvas for planners to introduce current best practice techniques
in addressing housing, open space, leisure, recreation, employment and
environmental issues.
FEH will deliver:
- A new Science or Technology Park – with up to
4,000 higher quality, well-paid jobs and the opportunity to develop
links with local schools, colleges and universities.
- A new link road from the A259 at Comet Corner,
to the A27, bridging the railway at Ford.
- Solutions to numerous road transport issues
which, in turn, help to create an infrastructure attractive to
business.
- A
Parkway railway station – with ample parking
at the centre of a new multi modal
transport hub.
- New
homes - looking directly towards the local economies
of Bognor and Littlehampton.
- Expanded marina facilities at Littlehampton.
An abandoned airfield, and underutilised railway
station, can become a thriving and modern commercial/residential
Enterprise Hub, which will act as the engine for the economic
regeneration of Bognor and Littlehampton.
FEH is the best option for sustainable growth in Arun.
